World's BEST Sugar Cookies!

If there is one cookie recipe that you need this holiday season, it's THESE super soft, chewy, "These are the best cookies I've ever had!" recipe!

This recipe was shared with me by a dear friend who found the recipe originally posted here. I've cleaned up the post a bit so that you can read and download it easier :)

Thick Soft Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup butter

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 3 tsp. vanilla

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 2 tsp. baking soda

  • 5 1/2 cups flour

  1. Set oven to 375.

  2. In mixer, cream butter and sugar

  3. Add eggs and vanilla

  4. Add sour cream.

  5. Combine salt, soda, and flour, and add to mixture.

  6. Roll out on floured surface to about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick.

  7. Use a spatula to carefully slide under each cookie and place onto greased (with Pam) parchment-lined cookie sheets.

  8. Bake 7-8 minutes. (THEY WILL NOT LOOK DONE! don't give in to your temptation to cook "just a little bit longer" or you will get crunchy cookies instead of soft, pillow-like cookies. They are still very pale and have no browning anywhere. If you have a golden brown color along the edges then you have baked them too long.)

  9. Cool about 5 minutes and then transfer carefully to a cooling rack. (If you wait longer they will get soggy on the bottom and sometimes get stuck to the parchment paper.)

Myself, like my friend and the writers of Peppermint Plum, prefer a simple frosting versus a buttercream for these cookies. I think a soft icing is what makes these chewy cookies even more delightful. All you need are a few ingredients and your favorite sprinkles to make these cookies pure *magic*!

Simple Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter softened

  • 4 cups icing sugar

  • 2 tsp vanilla (or other flavoring)

  • 1/4-1/3 cups milk

  1. Beat butter and sugar until crumbly and well-mixed.

  2. Add vanilla and beat.

  3. Add milk slowly until desired consistency is reached.

Once you've made these, let me know what you think below!
